Before getting started

Choose Hardware tab. Click on Device Manager button. 4 Find your Iomega Zip 100 USB Driver device in the list and press double click on the hdc device. Write down important information from the top or bottom of the hard drive, such as the model number, serial number, and its specifications.
Ensure you are familiar with ESD and its potential dangers.
When physically installing the zip disk drive, ensure the computer is powered down and unplugged.

Set the jumpers

When installing the IDE/EIDE zip drive ensure that the Zip drive has the proper jumper setting. The Zip drive is set as the secondary device.

Drive bays

An internal zip drive is always going to occupy or need a 3.5-inch drive bay. If no 3.5-inch drive bay is available, the computer needs a drive bracket and partial front bezel to cover the empty portion. Drive brackets are included with the internal zip disk drive package. If your computer does not accept the drive bracket, you may want to consider any of the below recommendations.

Contact the computer manufacturer for drive brackets compatible with your computer.
Visit a local computer store for alternate brackets.

Attach cables

Once the Zip disk drive has been installed into the computer, connect the IDE/EIDE interface cable to the back of the zip drive. Rock a bye baby song. Often, the red or blue side of the cable represents PIN 1. It should connect with the colored side of the cable facing the power connection.

When connecting the IDE/EIDE cable to the back of the Zip drive, connect the power cable to the back of the drive. This cable is often keyed and only goes in one direction.

BIOS setup

After connecting the Zip Drive, replace the case back and connect the keyboard, monitor, and power to the computer. We do not recommend you connect all the cables yet because if there are issues, you may have to disconnect them again.

As with any IDE/EIDE device, a Zip drive must be properly configured in your computer's BIOS. After you install your drive, turn on your computer. Then, as the computer is booting, enter the BIOS setup.

In BIOS, verify that the IDE/EIDE device is either set up as Auto or is set up as a 100 MB HDD. It is important to note that older computers may not properly detect an IDE/EIDE device and it may be required that a BIOS update be obtained.

Software setup

Once the drive has been installed and automatically or manually configured in BIOS, additional software needs to be installed. Use the disk included with your Zip drive (on floppy or CD) to install the drivers for your Zip drive. Note: For users who have Microsoft Windows 98, 2000, ME or later the drive should be automatically detected and installed, but the default installation will not install the Iomega Tools.

IOMega ZIP

ZIP disks gained some popularity in home computer use, and ZIP drives were installed even in some Apple Macintosh computers by manufacturer. They became quite popular 'larger floppy', and even some scientific imaging devices had ZIP drives built-in. Included software offered ease of use - to use ZIP drive in a new computer, for example to show some images or presentation, it was needed only to run one program. Driver installed itself and opened a new drive letter for drive. ZIP drives could be attached to parallel port, SCSI (there were combo versions - SCSI and parallel, depending of cable installed) or IDE (ATAPI - early pure-IDE versions are very rare), and later units had USB capabilities. After USB flash drives came to market, IOMega released 750MB ZIP, but it was too late for it and 750MB ZIP never gained popularity.

Unfortunately ZIP drives were prone to click-of-death failures. These failures (their mechanism is described in FAQ) could cause data and media loss. Branding portable ZIP-like drive 'IOMega Click!' was not a good idea when these problems came out :).

To run ZIP drive, you must have ZIP Tools or ZIP Guest driver. IOMega released drivers in packages, so usually ZIP 250 driver package contain older driver for 100, and it may contain even drivers for IDE, ATAPI or parallel port drives. IOMegaware is a big package containing nearly all drivers. Zip Tools is a full suite of software, while ZIP Guest is a simple DOS driver only to run ZIP drive and access files. There are also Win95 versions of Guest tool.

Under DOS, you usually run guest with paraleter letter, like:
guest letter=z
installs ZIP under letter Z. Make sure the letter is not forbidden by LASTDRIVE. Parallel port ZIP won't work with unidirectional ports. More about using ZIP drivers can be read in this site.

Unfortunately IOMega can't go along with download links on their own website, they change it frequently and make dead links in support pages, especially for older platforms, so I have to waste my hosting bandwidth and put here essentials which allow to use ZIP with old computers.

So, For Windows 98, 2K, ME, XP or 3.x, just download JAZ pack (part1, part2, part3).

For Windows 95 and NT, try this: (part1part2part3part4part5). This archive contains 3.11 and 3.06 old versions.

DOS: Guest may be used, here is a version 5.4. here's older 4.2 with all driver package. Packages contain Guest95 too. This package contains earlier versions of GUEST (3.x, 4.x, 5.0), you should also check this as it contains minimum driver sets for parallel port and SCSI.

There are some alternative drivers such as commercial PalmZip, which can work under DOS with very old computers (8086).
